Hardenability of steel
After quenching, the structure of steel undergoes martensitic transformation from the surface, with the highest content of martensite in the surface layer, accounting for 97-99%. The deeper the volume of martensite, the less it decreases until it completely disappears. We will increase the martensite content from the surface to 50%
As a statistical standard, this area is counted as the hardened layer of steel; The thickness and depth of the hardened layer are used as evaluation indicators for heat treatment performance, known as hardenability. The thickness of the hardened layer of steel indicates its good hardenability; The shallow hardening layer of steel indicates poor hardenability. Therefore, hardenability essentially refers to the ability of steel to harden in cross-section.
